History suggests that the city of Madhepura was once part of glorious Mauryan dynasty. A Mauryan pillar erected at Uda-kishunganj provides evidence about the city being part of one of the greatest empires in Ancient India. The city of Madhepura was ruled by various dynasties including Maurya, Sunga, Kanva and Kushan dynasties. During Mughal period, the city of Madhepura was governed by Sarkar Tirhut.
